Baseball Hall Of Fame Welcomes Pudge, Bagwell, Raines

Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez stared out at his father, wiping away tears as he spoke.

"I love you with all of my heart," Rodriguez said. "If I'm a Hall of Famer, you're a Hall of Famer -- double."

Those words punctuated Rodriguez's speech as he was inducted Sunday into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Jeff Bagwell and Tim Raines, along with former commissioner Bud Selig and front-office guru John Schuerholz, also were enshrined on a picture-perfect summer day in front of more than 27,000 fans.

Adrian Beltre Joins 3,000-Hit Club

Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre has become the 31st member of the 3,000-hit club, thanks to a double in the fourth inning of Sunday's game against the Orioles.

The milestone hit came on a 3-0 count against left-handed pitcher Wade Miley. Beltre struck out swinging in his first at-bat.

After Beltre's double, his three children ran out to right-center field to reveal a banner commemorating his 3,000 hits on the wall in front of the Rangers bullpen. Beltre's teammates also joined him on the field to recognize his achievement.

Beltre, in his 20th big league season, is the first player to reach the 3,000-hit milestone while a member of the Rangers and the first player born in the Dominican Republic to accomplish the feat.

Bay Area Icon Bill King Receives Ford C. Frick Award

At long last, Bay Area radio icon Bill King was awarded the highest honor in baseball broadcasting Saturday.

King, the A’s radio play-by-play man for 25 years, posthumously received the Ford C. Frick Award in a star-studded ceremony at Doubleday Field, with his stepdaughter, Kathleen Lowenthal, accepting on his behalf.

“I think this is a ‘Holy Toledo’ moment,” Lowenthal said, using her stepdad’s catchphrase with dozens of Hall of Fame players and managers applauding behind her on the stage. “It is for me. Holy Toledo.”

Setting the AL record for consecutive saves converted requires a remarkable display of consistency.

Patience also played a part for Zach Britton, because the Orioles closer went more than 14 weeks this season between tying the mark and breaking it.

Britton converted his 55th straight save opportunity Sunday, blanking the Astros in the ninth inning to seal Baltimore's 9-7 victory.

Bellinger First Dodgers' Rookie To Hit For Cycle

Cody Bellinger legged out a leadoff triple in the seventh inning on Saturday against the Marlins to become the first Dodgers rookie to hit for the cycle.

Bellinger hit a single in the first inning, a two-run home run in the third and an RBI double in the fourth before tripling to deep right-center in the seventh. The triple barely cleared the glove of right fielder Giancarlo Stanton, who tried to making a running, backhanded catch.

Giants Honor Bonds With Wall Of Fame Plaque

The Giants honored Barry Bonds with the unveiling of a plaque bearing his likeness on the team's Wall of Fame during a pregame ceremony Saturday.

Nearly 1,000 fans lined up behind barricades not far from the players' entrance at AT&T Park to witness a 40-minute ceremony honoring Bonds. Several of Bonds' former teammates were on hand, as was Giants manager Bruce Bochy, along with Hall of Famers Willie McCovey and Willie Mays, who is Bonds' godfather.

Mookie Betts Has Eight RBIs From Leadoff Spot To Tie Record

Mookie Betts had eight RBIs on Sunday in the Boston Red Sox's 15-1 rout of the Toronto Blue Jays, tying a major league record for RBIs in a game by a leadoff hitter, according to ESPN Stats & Information.

Only five players have recorded eight RBIs in a game from the leadoff spot since 1920, when RBIs became an official statistic.
